Shuchanna, Swaby Law
I opened my sole-practitioner family law practice in Kitchener, Ontario in March 2020 - just as the pandemic turned the world upside down. I was confident that I had a sufficient understanding of family law to support a long and rewarding career, but the two things that I was not as confident about were managing my books, records and trust accounting according to Law Society standards and processing my billings promptly enough to meet my expenses. These services had always been provided for me by others in my previous career incarnations. …And so, began my search for an expert coach to help me develop a satisfying and financially sustainable practice.

Fortunately, amidst the cacophony of financial and legal accounting advisors, I found Jill Ulett, who goes by the moniker “Accounting Girl”.
Jill’s expertise, teaching skill, professionalism and good humor have proven invaluable to the management and growth of my practice. She taught me not only the “how” but the “why” behind managing the records for my trust and general accounts. Jill shared business strategies for running a successful legal practice and helped me to design billing management procedures to ensure that my practice will survive and prosper well into the future. Most importantly, she focused on my specific needs and patiently encouraged me to ask all the questions I wanted, no matter how elementary they may have seemed.

With Jill’s guidance, my practice has grown to the point where I now require an assistant, all within eight months of some of the most challenging times ever known. Not only did she help me to position myself for professional and commercial success, but all of her advice was provided within a framework of financial integrity and ethical obligations to clients. ill helped to reduce many of the stresses and fears around accounting that would have impeded my professional progress. With her help, I have developed the skills and techniques to conquer many of my original anxieties about practice management. Because of Jill I have the confidence, skill and tools to succeed.

Before working with Accounting Girl, I was struggling with financial issues related to running a small, immigration law firm. As our firm grew in size, our financial needs changed and grew in spurts and jumps.

As I started looking for help with overseeing the finances, I was concerned about working with a virtual CFO. I was unsure how having someone off-site work on my day-to-day financial matters would work.
I wondered how responsive Jill could possibly be.

Jill showed me how she could solve the headaches dealing with the tedious nature of financial oversight and to do it in an efficient and professional manner.

I feel extremely satisfied about Accounting Girl’s virtual CFO service because she keeps track of all of our finances, helps me keep my eye on all the important financial metrics and is 100% a member of our team.

As a result of working with Jill, I can devote more time to practicing immigration law without the tedium of financial micro-managing.
